Supervision groups

Supervision Groups for Clinicians at Arches Healing & Growth

At Arches Healing & Growth, our supervision groups offer a collaborative and supportive environment for clinicians to develop professionally, share insights, and refine their clinical skills.

Led by experienced supervisors, these group sessions allow clinicians to discuss challenging cases, receive constructive feedback, and learn from the experiences of their peers.

Supervision groups provide a space for clinicians to explore clinical issues, ethical dilemmas, and engage in self-reflection in a safe and confidential setting. Whether you’re working toward licensure or seeking ongoing professional development, our supervision groups foster connection, accountability, and continued growth. The goal is to help you become a more confident and competent clinician.

Summary of Differences

  • Supervision is primarily focused on the professional growth and development of the clinician. It’s typically required for licensure or ongoing professional development. Supervisors oversee the clinical practice of participants while ensuring ethical standards, best practices, and competency. Supervision groups often focus on evaluating a clinician’s work, providing guidance, and addressing personal development as a therapist.

  • The primary focus in supervision is on clinical growth, ethical practice, and competence. Supervisors review specific cases, assess the clinician’s professional development, help navigate ethical dilemmas, and provide direct feedback on therapeutic work. Supervision often includes reflective work on how personal experiences or emotions (countertransference) impact clinical practice.

  • Supervision groups are typically led by a licensed supervisor (e.g., LCSW, MFT, psychologist) who is responsible for overseeing the work of each participant, ensuring ethical practice, and guiding their clinical decision-making. Supervisors are expected to assess the clinician’s competence and provide feedback that is linked to licensure or clinical development.

  • The outcome of supervision groups often includes professional evaluations, documented feedback, and meeting licensing requirements. Supervisors provide formal assessments and progress reports to help clinicians meet the necessary criteria for licensure or professional advancement.

  • In supervision groups, confidentiality is paramount, but there is also an additional level of oversight and accountability. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring ethical standards are followed. A supervisor may need to intervene in situations where clinical or ethical concerns arise. Supervisors also provide guidance on setting appropriate boundaries with clients.

Consultation Groups

Consultation groups are typically more peer-oriented and are used to enhance clinical skills, solve specific clinical problems, or gain new perspectives. These groups are less about evaluating the participant’s overall professional development and more about sharing knowledge, brainstorming solutions, and providing input on particular clinical challenges.

In consultation groups, the focus is more on problem-solving, case discussion, and shared expertise. Clinicians typically bring in challenging cases for group feedback or seek advice on complex clinical issues. It’s less about professional evaluation and more about learning from others’ experiences and perspectives.

Topics in this group include:

  • Self of the therapist

  • Guest speakers

  • Case presentations

  • Local trainings

  • Book and literature reviews
